The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College has become the first UH campus to sign the national Beyond Benign Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC), marking a significant milestone in its pursuit of sustainability.

The Benefits of GCC

  • Access to a global network of like-minded educators and scientists
  • Use of valuable tools and resources to support sustainability goals
  • Opportunity to collaborate with other institutions

By joining GCC, UH Maui College becomes part of a larger community of colleges and universities working together towards a shared mission. This collaboration enables the college to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in sustainable chemistry and to leverage the expertise of its network members.

The Impact on Students

  1. Equipping students with modern, industry-relevant skills in sustainable chemistry
  2. Enhancing their career readiness and understanding of environmental and health impacts
  3. Supporting their development as sustainability leaders in the field of chemistry

Students enrolled in courses such as Chemistry and Society, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry will benefit from learning how to design safer, more sustainable chemical processes. This will not only increase their career readiness but also cultivate a deeper understanding of the environmental and health impacts of chemistry.

UH Maui College’s Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability Goals Lower chemical waste generation Reduce the environmental impact of chemistry Create a more sustainable future for Maui

UH Maui College’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its long-standing commitment to embedding sustainability into its curriculum. GCC now provides a framework to further support this effort, enabling the college to take a significant leap forward in its sustainability goals.

A New Era of Sustainability

“I’m thrilled that our department has taken on the Green Chemistry Commitment,” said Sean Calder, UH Maui College STEM division chair. “This will enable the college to lower its chemical waste generation and help us become better stewards of the environment, creating a more sustainable future for Maui.”

With the support of GCC, UH Maui College is poised to embark on a new era of sustainability, one that will have a lasting impact on the environment and the community.
